DDG: Off-Duty 911 Dispatcher Saves Runner Who Collapsed During 5k

This past weekend, Jenessa Thornton, a 911 dispatcher with years of experience, found herself in the right place at the right time during the Cotton Days 5k in Washington City, Utah. Despite initially thinking she might skip the race that morning, Thornton ended up running alongside Fred Bernhardt, an older man who impressed her with his speed. Suddenly, he collapsed during the race, prompting her to spring into action and start performing CPR.

Thanks to Thornton's quick response and help from another bystander, Bernhardt was revived and regained consciousness before first responders arrived. He expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging that Thornton likely saved his life. Despite the intensity of the situation, she remained composed and credits her training and experience for knowing what to do at such a critical moment.

Both Thornton and Bernhardt are now preaching about the importance of CPR training for everyone. Inspired by his own experience, Bernhardt is now planning to refresh his CPR skills to be able to help others in the future. For the profound impact that Thornton has had on his life, he’s taken to calling her his "guardian CPR angel."
